What Kind of Alexander Calder Do You Own?

We evaluate a wide range of Alexander Calder artworks, including hanging mobiles, standing mobiles, stabiles, gouaches, drawings, works on paper, lithographs, prints and other documented works.

Important identifying details can include the medium, dimensions, signature, date, construction, provenance, exhibition history, labels and whether the work is registered in the archives of the Calder Foundation.

If you are not sure exactly what you own, send us clear photographs of the artwork from multiple angles, including the signature, base, reverse, labels and any documents you have. We can help identify the work and determine whether it may be appropriate for valuation or direct purchase.

How Much Is My Alexander Calder Worth?

The value of an Alexander Calder depends on the exact artwork rather than the artist’s name alone. A hanging mobile, standing mobile, stabile, gouache, drawing and signed lithograph can each occupy very different parts of the market.

Important valuation factors can include:

Medium
Date or period
Size
Construction and complexity
Signature
Condition
Provenance
Exhibition history
Calder Foundation registration or archive information
Rarity
Recent comparable sales
Current collector demand

For Calder gouaches, recent auction catalogues regularly identify the exact medium, dimensions, date, provenance and Calder Foundation archive registration.

For Calder prints, edition size, paper, signature, numbering, printer, publisher and condition can all affect value. Phillips, for example, routinely records signed and numbered Calder lithographs on Arches paper together with edition and printer information.

Does Calder Foundation Registration Matter?

Yes. Registration can be an important part of documenting an Alexander Calder artwork.

The Calder Foundation states that its archive contains more than 22,000 registered Calder works, documented with information including image, title, date, size, media, provenance and publication or exhibition history. Owners of works attributed to Calder are encouraged to apply for registration.

It is important, however, to understand what registration means. The Foundation states that submitting a registration application does not guarantee registration and does not create an authentication agreement. The Foundation may also physically examine works, but it does not issue certificates of authenticity and does not provide appraisals or valuations.

If you own a Calder that has an archive application or registration number, include that information when contacting us.

Should I Sell My Alexander Calder Privately or at Auction?

Both private sale and auction can be appropriate depending on the artwork.

Auction can provide broad exposure for rare or highly desirable Calder works, particularly important mobiles, stabiles and historically significant sculptures. However, auction can also involve estimates, reserves, scheduled sale dates, seller-related costs and the possibility that a work does not sell.

A direct private sale can offer greater discretion, more control over timing and a more predictable transaction.

Before deciding how to sell your Calder, we recommend identifying the exact work and reviewing its medium, date, condition, provenance, archive documentation, relevant recent sales and current collector demand.

What Should I Send for a Calder Valuation?

To begin, send:

Clear photographs of the artwork
Multiple views for mobiles, stabiles or sculpture
Photograph of the signature
Dimensions
Date, if known
Provenance or previous ownership
Gallery or auction records
Calder Foundation registration or application information, if available
Any labels or exhibition documentation
Any known condition issues

You do not need to have every detail before contacting us. Clear photographs are often enough for us to begin identifying and researching the work.

Frequently Asked Questions About Selling Alexander Calder Art

Where can I sell an Alexander Calder artwork?

You can sell an Alexander Calder through a specialist dealer, private buyer, gallery or auction house. The best route depends on the exact work, medium, provenance, condition, documentation, current collector demand and how you want the sale handled. We evaluate Calder artworks for potential direct purchase and can help identify the work before discussing value or sale options.

Do you buy Alexander Calder mobiles and stabiles directly?

Yes, we consider select Alexander Calder mobiles, stabiles, maquettes and other sculptures for direct purchase. We review the exact work, dimensions, date, construction, condition, provenance, Calder Foundation information, relevant recent sales and current market demand before determining whether it is a work we are interested in acquiring.

Do you buy Alexander Calder gouaches?

Yes. Calder produced an important body of gouaches and gouache-and-ink works on paper, particularly during the later decades of his career. We evaluate Calder gouaches based on date, image, dimensions, condition, provenance, archive documentation, recent comparable sales and current collector demand.

Can you value my Calder from photographs?

In many cases, photographs provide enough information to begin evaluating an Alexander Calder artwork. For sculpture, send multiple clear views showing the complete work, signature, base and construction. For works on paper, include the front, reverse, signature, labels and dimensions. Additional inspection or documentation may be required for certain works.

Does a Calder need to be registered with the Calder Foundation?

Not every owner who contacts us will already have Calder Foundation registration information. However, archive registration or an application number can be important documentation when evaluating certain Calder works. The Foundation itself encourages owners of works attributed to Calder to apply for registration, although registration is separate from valuation and does not constitute a certificate of authenticity.

Are Alexander Calder prints valuable?

Original Calder lithographs and other prints can have meaningful collector value, but prices vary widely depending on image, edition size, signature, paper, printer, publisher, condition and current demand. Signed and numbered Calder lithographs generally occupy a different market from unsigned reproductions or decorative prints.
