Alexander Calder Prints and Lithographs We Buy

Calder’s graphic works bring his interest in color, balance and movement to paper. We consider original lithographs featuring abstract shapes, circles, spirals, animals and other subjects, including works from portfolios such as Our Unfinished Revolution. Every inquiry is reviewed according to the exact image, edition and condition.

Identify the Exact Print and Edition

Useful details include the title, date, printing technique, image and sheet dimensions, paper, signature, numbering, printer and publisher. The same image may exist in different formats or publications. Photograph any blind stamps, watermarks, inscriptions and portfolio title pages where accessible. Our Calder research guide explains what to collect.

Signatures, Proofs and Reproductions

A hand signature differs from a signature printed as part of the image. Numbering or a signature alone does not establish authenticity. Original prints, authorized posters, book illustrations and later reproductions should be identified separately. Proof inscriptions such as A.P. or H.C. must be checked against the documented edition; they do not automatically make a print more valuable.

What Affects a Calder Lithograph’s Value?

The image, edition, signature, condition, provenance and current collector demand can all affect market value. We review relevant comparable sales rather than applying one price to every Calder print. For portfolios, completeness and the presence of original publication materials also matter. Read our Alexander Calder value guide for more detail.

Condition and Supporting Documents

Tell us about fading, discoloration, foxing, tears, creases, trimmed margins, restoration or mounting to a backing. Include invoices, gallery labels, exhibition records and any existing Calder Foundation correspondence. Photograph the work as it is, and avoid cleaning the sheet or removing it from its mount yourself.

What to Send for Review

  • A clear photograph of the entire print, including visible margins.
  • Close-ups of the signature, edition number, stamps and condition concerns.
  • The reverse, frame labels and publication information, where safely accessible.
  • Dimensions, current location, ownership history and supporting documents.
