Alexander Calder Gouaches and Works on Paper
Calder’s gouaches bring his interest in color, line and movement onto paper. Compositions can feature circles, spirals, stars, abstract shapes and figurative subjects. Many combine gouache with ink. He concentrated on gouaches during his stay in Aix-en-Provence in 1953 and continued working in the medium alongside his sculpture.

Is Your Calder a Gouache or a Print?
Gouache is an opaque, water-based paint. A painted work on paper should be distinguished from a lithograph, poster or reproduction of the same image. A signature alone does not establish the medium or authorship. Close photographs of the surface, signature and sheet can help us begin reviewing the work. Our Calder research guide explains the identifying details to collect.
What Affects a Calder Gouache’s Value?
The exact composition, date, dimensions, medium, condition and provenance can all affect market value. We review relevant comparable sales and current collector demand for similar works. An original gouache should be assessed separately from an editioned print. Read our Alexander Calder value guide for more information.
Condition and Ownership History
Tell us about fading, discoloration, foxing, tears, creases, paint loss, previous repairs or mounting to a backing. Include purchase invoices, gallery labels, exhibition records and earlier photographs where available. Photograph the work as it is; avoid cleaning the surface or removing it from its mount yourself.
Calder Foundation Information
Include any existing Calder Foundation correspondence or archive information. The Foundation’s registration and examination process is separate from a gallery valuation. It does not issue certificates of authenticity or provide appraisals, and submitting a registration application does not guarantee registration.
